Poundland helps Cumbrian flood victims

23 November 2009

Poundland, Europe’s biggest single price discount retailer, has stepped in to help the flood victims in Cumbria with donations to the local community and to the disaster fund.

With a store in Workington in Cumbria, Poundland was quickly alerted to the gravity of the flood damage in the area and wanted to help with the clean up operation.

From today the Workington store, which has remained open, will be giving away 1,000 free bin bags and 1,000 free packs of Delissia Cherry Bakewells for families affected by the floods. As well as helping those in Workington, Poundland is donating £250 to the Cumbria Flood Fund which has already raised an impressive £150,000 to help flood victims in the region.

Many residents in the Workington area are without water, electricity and gas, and food supplies are starting to run low as the local convenience store has depleted supplies. The Poundland Workington store is lucky to have escaped the effects of the floods and is urging customers to make a donation to the Cumbrian Flood Fund, to help those who are struggling to get back to normal.

Jim McCarthy, Chief Executive, Poundland, said: “The recent floods have created difficult situations for local families and businesses alike and Poundland is happy to donate essential items and money to help the clean up operation. We urge all Poundland shoppers nationwide to think of those affected in Cumbria and give as much as they can to help with Christmas only weeks away.”
