Monday 11 January
Willenhall, West Midlands: Poundland, Europe’s biggest single price discount retailer, today announced its Christmas trading results for the five weeks ending 3rd January 2010, with an increase in like for like sales of 4.4 per cent. Total sales (including new stores) for the period were up 34.8 per cent year on year.
Despite the difficult trading conditions in the current economic climate, Poundland demonstrated steady growth in all areas of the business as customers continued to look for value for money on the high street.
Poundland has announced that it will offer permanent employment to 360 temporary workers who were recruited to help serve the thousands of extra customers during the busy Christmas period. Poundland’s impressive expansion continues, with at least a further eight stores planned to open before the end of the financial year March 2010, creating a further 250 new jobs.
During the Christmas sales period, Poundland sold its valued customers 3 million crackers, 1.1 million single Christmas cards, over 1 million packs of batteries, 2237 miles of tinsel and 10,500 miles of wrapping paper.
Chief Executive Jim McCarthy commented: “The increase in shoppers over Christmas 2009 is yet more proof that Poundland continues to offer both quality and value. With more and more customers spreading the weekly shop across several stores to help their budget stretch further, we are confident that sales will continue to reflect this customer trend throughout 2010 and beyond.”
Poundland operates from 254 stores nationwide and welcomes over 2.5 million customers every week with this number increasing significantly during the busy Christmas period, as customers seek amazing seasonal value.
