Derbyshire in top 30 counties for broadband speeds – but businesses not exploiting it, claims DDEP

New research has highlighted the vast disparity in broadband speeds between urban areas and rural, and between north and south.

The good news is that Derbyshire features in the top 30 counties for decent speeds. However, Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership (DDEP), part of the regional development agency, has today warned that businesses need to start exploiting broadband speeds to become more successful.

D DEP will shortly be launching Derbyshire – Well Connected, a campaign to help businesses of all sizes exploit broadband and other information technology. With a helpline, website and events all coming soon, Derbyshire – Well Connected aims to make sure that Derbyshire is geared up for economic success.

Russell Copley, who is managing the project for DDEP says: “Although Derbyshire is in the top 30 counties for broadband speeds, we are lagging behind when it comes to making the most of the technology. Not enough businesses are using modern technology to improve their success.”

Russell is urging all businesses in Derbyshire – large or small – to register for information about the forthcoming campaign, which will include possible grants for businesses in the area who want to improve the way they do business by using the web and other ICT.

He says: “There are many ways you can use the web to make your business more successful. For example, if you’re a Derby business, with employees who live rurally, you might want to cut costs by allowing staff to work from home. If you’re a B&B you could develop an online booking service or invest in a website that can easily be found by tourists. If you sell goods to consumers, you could develop online trading.”
